Birds of a feather: a feathered-inspired look with the Fab40s

We’re a small group of bloggers, the Fab40s, who get together on the last Monday of each month to play dress up! Last month our theme was polka dots. We take it in turns to choose a fun theme for the post and this month Shelbee chose ‘birds of a feather’. I immediately knew how I was going to interpret this theme…with the most fabulous handbag!

The handbag in question is made of feathers, black ostrich feathers, so I figured I would go for a bit of a rock chick look. That’s all I knew until I started raiding my wardrobe last week. I tried a couple of things but they weren’t quite right with the feathered bag until I stumbled across this sweater. It was a gift from my mother-in-law about five years ago—the Christmas we flew to Washington. I remember that because I have a photo of me wearing it in the hotel for New Year’s Eve. Anyway, the sweater is quite fluffy and resembles feathery fabric (from a distance lol), it’s really soft and comfy. As soon as I put it together with the bag, it seemed like the perfect combination. One of the things I love about the sweater is that it looks like it’s been tie-dyed. Cool, right?

I bought these white loose fit jeans from Massimo Dutti a couple of years ago. It was one of those perfect moments where this was the last pair and they were my size YAY! They fit so perfectly, they could have been made for me. And the boots…well, I treated myself to them quite a few years ago and they really are one of my favourite things. Aren’t they stunning? They’re so rock chick, right? Unfortunately, they’re not the most comfortable boots in my wardrobe, so I don’t wear them as much as I’d like.

Birds of a feather

I finished off this ‘birds of a feather’ look with a long black necklace, some black crystal bracelets, a couple of rock chick rings (!), my black Citizen watch and these fabulous winged earrings. I realise I haven’t talked about my Citizen watches before. I’m literally obsessed with this brand. They’re the only watch brand I buy for myself, mainly because they’re ‘Eco-Drive’, so they’re powered by light and don’t need batteries. I have four of them. My most recent purchase was in France and before that Michael bought me this black one for my birthday when we were last in New York. I’ve just been having a little look on their website and there’s a few I’ve got my eye on lol. I shall have to drop a few hints to Michael! That’s one thing he does like to buy… watches. He’s a man obsessed! It’s not just him, it’s his best pal too. They can literally talk about watches for hours. Drives me nuts sometimes. I keep telling them they should start a YouTube channel about their three passions: watches, motorbikes and cycling. It would be hilarious. The ones liners and silliness that come out of their mouths…! But I’ve gone off on a tangent haven’t I. Where was I? Oh yeah, ‘birds of a feather’. What I was going to say is that I really love dressing like this, as if I’m going to see Def Leppard in concert or something lol. I think I’m showing my age now! I do really like Deff Leppard though lol.

Anyway, that’s my Fab40s look for this month, let’s check out the other gals and see how they’ve interpreted this fun theme!
Are you in your 40s and fancy joining us, then drop me (or any of the others) a quick message so we can add you to the group! We’d love to have you with us every month!

Ada, Elegance and Mommyhood

Ada has opted for the most perfect bird print sweater for this month’s theme. It’s super cute, and it goes so beautifully with those gorgeous green skinny jeans! And I must also mention the really cute pink hairclip too!

Outfit Details:
Bird Sweater & Olive Skinny Jeans: Old Navy.
Khaki Moto Jacket: Abercrombie.
Black Strappy Flats: Steve Madden.
Pink Tortoise Hair Clip: Sugarfix by BaubleBar.

Daenel, Living Outside the Stacks

Daenel’s outfit this month has such a lovely story attached to it. I’ll let her tell it, “Soooo, I think you guys know I have a twin sister. She’s my “Wombmate” and lately we’ve been flocking to a website called Three Birds Nest and ended up buying the same shirt and dressing in coordinating colors. We’ve never been “those” twins so this is all new to us. Especially since we live 5 hours apart.” Isn’t that amazing?
And they both look absolutely beautiful!

Shelbee, Shelbee on the Edge

Shelbee also had a touch of serendipity to her post this month. Again, I’ll let you tell the story herself, “I recently ordered a new bra from Poshmark and the package arrived today. I was super excited but when I opened it, I discovered they sent me this red and black feathered fascinator by mistake! (It is literally the same shape as a folded up bra! Haha) I am in the process of facilitating the return because I really want my bra, but the hat was perfect for my outfit, so I “borrowed” it for the photoshoot! How’s that for serendipity!”
And she’s teamed the fascinator with a gorgeous swan-print dress that look just perfect together!

And me…

  1. Suzy, I love this outfit so much! From the feathery bag to that amazing sweater to your cool boots and feather earrings. It is all so freaking cool and I would wear this outfit in a heartbeat! I am not sure who is up for choosing the next theme! I will have to go digging through my emails to find that little schedule I made a while back. I am such a disorganized mess!

Very cool. Gerben also liked to talk about watches…. okay…… we like to talk about shoes right lol. Love those earrings, the first feather pair I bought in the UK, when I was 14. Bought it in Cheddar, and loved them. Your sweater is really great!

    • Suzy says:

      Thanks Nancy!
How cool that your first pair of feather earrings was from England! I love Somerset, we have some very good friends who live in Frome but we’ve still never actually visited Cheddar!!

      Hi Mireille,
I’m sorry your first comment didn’t work. I have been having some blog issues, it might have been that that was causing it. It seems to have been fixed now though, thankfully!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment.

  4. Your videos are so fun! And sassy.

Love this outfit… the feathery feel of your sweater screams cozy while not overwhelming. And the colors are perfect.

  5. What a fun theme! I adore your sweater and cool bag. Stunning look!

  6. If I had been Shelbee I would have kept the fascinator, trying to negotiate a discount as well. It is cute.
Daenel’s hair is so striking. I loved it immediately as I set eyes on it. Both sisters look stunning.
With Ada’s look I love it that the bird is just peeping out of her jacket.
And you my dear, you are the ultimate rock chick. Your outfit is fab, all items of it. And your hair is so good with it.

Fabulous look Suzy. I’m busy examining every detail starting with your crimped hair! The jumper is lush with that texture and tie dye effect, and the bag is a fun extravaganza! I was racking my brains about how I would interpret this theme. You did great. Btw love the colourful glasses. I’m having my eyes tested today and hope to find a funky pair.

  9. Jacqui Berry says:

A great theme, although I don’t think I would have anything to do withe birds even though I love them! Your jumper is super and how lucky with the jeans. Have super weekend and thanks for sharing on #chicandsylish Jacqui x

  10. This is a sweet rocker chic(k) look, Suzy, love it! Being a bit of a rocker chick at heart, I am drawn to “tough” details like studs and leather, but this bag is to die for! I love that Muppety sweater (I went through a phase of these a few years ago) – those are so soft to wear!

    Awesome look!

    • Suzy says:

Sheila, I LOVE the way you described the sweater has Muppety!! That’s so brilliant lol!
      Thank you so much!
