Welcome to June’s Songful Style post! It doesn’t matter from what angle the song inspires the outfit, it can be from the lyrics, the tune itself, the album cover, music video, etc. Last month our song was Hello, Goodbye by the Beatles. This month, our Songful Style song was chosen by Anne and is Behind the Wall of Sleep by Pat DiNizio and The Smithereens. You can read why she chose this song over on her blog at Spy Girl.

I’m not going to lie. This challenge was, well…a challenge lol! I had no idea how to tackle it for an outfit, so, in the end I chose the easy route, and used the line, she dressed as black as coal. I’ve always loved wearing head to toe black so it actually ended up not being so difficult because I have lots of black clothes. And, as there was mention of Jean Shrimpton in the sixties, I decided to wear a shift dress not unlike the ones she used to wear. Mine, however, is a little more flowy than the popular ones of that era.
To try and make myself look taller, I also wore a pair of black linen trousers and black heels. I accessorised the look with a funky black necklace and stone bracelets, as well as a chunky black ring. My favourite black leather clutch completed the outfit. Everything I’m wearing here is old. The dress and the trousers were both from H&M. The black heels are from Ecco and the clutch was from Massimo Dutti.
It’s the kind of outfit I’m happy to wear anywhere, because I always feel so comfortable—and confident—in black. I guess you could say, black is my comfort blanket when it comes to clothes! Do you have a colour that you tend to gravitate towards?
As for the song, Behind the Wall of Sleep, I love it! If I’d have given myself more time to really tune into this challenge, I might have tried to come up with something related to sleep and dreams…something a bit more creative, but because of our recent move, I just had too much on my mind. Perhaps next month’s song choice might see me being much more creative! I hope so, because it was my turn to choose the July Songful Style song, and I’ve gone with one of my favourite 80s tunes: When Doves Cry by Prince. Currently though, I have absolutely no idea how I’m going to style that one lol! But I do hope you’ll join in the fun!

Suzy, this outfit is so great! I love that you styled a shift dress reminiscent of Jean Shrimpton’s style. And the “dressed as black as coal” lyric seemed to be what we all focused on for some really fabulously chic and sassy outfits, in my opinion. You look amazing, my friend! I am excited about your song choice for next month. There is so much style inspiration in the video and I feel like a bathtub might be in order for my photo setting! Haha. I just wish I had clothing as fabulous as Prince’s. But I do not. Because no one else can be that fabulous. Ever. Prince is seriously one of my favorite fashion icons of all time and when I was 12, I was convinced that I was going to marry him. In fact, I was torn between Raspberry Beret and Little Red Corvette (my two favorite Prince songs) for my next song choice, but now I might hold off on another Prince tune for another round! I can’t wait to see what everyone does for July!

LOL I had thought about raspberry beret too… but I figured we could save that for the winter as I do, in fact, have a raspberry beret LOL!! I loved Prince too, but I don’t think I ever thought I would marry him. I’m rather embarrassed to say I wanted to marry Limahl from Kajagoogoo (Neverending Story song). When I look at him now, I get quite embarrassed!!!! he he he

Love the lyrics and your outfit! I really love the dress with the trousers here in an all black look! Fabulous on you and the black necklace is just a great textural statement! I will have to take a listen to this song as I don’t know it but I lyrics are cool.

Suzy!!! You are so long and cool in this look!!! You are perfection in it! I love that you used a shift dress. I googled and googled Jean Shrimpton and just couldn’t reproduce any of her looks! I was going to go with a heavy kohl lined eye, but I don’t think she really did that!

I think you did really well. The black outfit and the way you styled and accessorized it, is perfect. Very Italian.
What I find odd about the song is that “you” and “her” are both used.
