How to style Sky above Clouds IV: Style Imitating Art

This week’s Style Imitating Art theme is Sky above Clouds IV by Georgia O’Keeffe. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. It’s a lot of fun, and it really does challenge your style brain lol

I love this piece of artwork, and think it looks quite contemporary, right? But it was actually painted in 1965 when the artist was 77 years old. The colours are absolutely gorgeous and I think it’s such a great focal point for our inspiration this week.

Here’s what I wore:

I chose my new off the shoulder white cotton blouse from H&M, because I wanted to wear white on top and I figured the ‘bulbous’ effect it gives, could suggest clouds. The dark blue of the denim-look trousers, and the pale blue handbag represent the blue sky, whereas the coral sandals (Calla Shoes) and pale pink necklace are representative of those beautiful sunny tones in the sky. I think I will probably get a lot of wear out of this blouse. With it being 100% cotton, it will be the perfect top to wear in the height of the summer when it gets really hot here.

As for my photography skills—this wasn’t the easiest outfit to take photos of, because the bright white made it difficult to get the right exposure against such a dark backdrop. Ideally, I should have moved to a better location! But they’re good enough to show the outfit, I guess. This just proves that I’m slowly learning (emphasis on the slow lol).

How about you? How would you style an outfit based on Sky Above Clouds? Check out the previous Style Imitating Art posts I’ve taken part in: Aurora Borealis, Nick Cave’s Soundsuit and Woman with a Coffee Pot.

Thanks Laurie! It’s going to be crease like mad though, with it being cotton, but it’s probably worth it lol!

These challenges are such fun because you see everyone’s creative process and interpretation. I don’t remember this artwork but I love it. You did a great job with the OTS top and pops of coral and blue xx
