Denim skirts: love them or loathe them & link-up

I have a love / hate relationship with denim skirts. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to find one that I love. To be honest, I’m not particularly digging this one, either. Fortunately, it was a thrift shop find and only cost a few euros. I didn’t try it on in the store, and when I got it home and put it on, it just felt ok. Perhaps even a bit bleurgh. While I did manage to make it look pretty good with this green outfit, I just wasn’t comfortable in it.

What is it with this style of denim skirts, anyway? They sit on the hips and then slowly turn as you walk and you end up with the pockets almost on your hips! Drives me crazy. I want denim skirts that sit still, for goodness sake!

I once made my own denim skirt out of a pair of jeans, which was fun. But admittedly, I didn’t do the best job, so (again) I didn’t feel that comfortable in it. Now, if you read my last post, you might wonder why I’m banging on about comfort again? Well, there’s one thing being a bit uncomfortable in a pair of fabulous heels, and it’s quite another wearing a skirt that won’t freaking well sit still! I was very proud of the skirt I made, however, because it was in the mid to late 90s when I was young and hadn’t done anything like it before. Basically, I undid the seams of the inner legs and added a large triangle of fabric. So, it was a very long, very wide skirt. I wish I had a photo, but I don’t have many pictures from that time, sadly.

Anyway, I often look out for denim skirts whilst shopping, because I am determined to find some that I love. Mainly because I’ve always been such a huge jeans fan and it seems silly not to have some great denim skirts to add to my collection. And, I love them on other people so I know they can look bloody good!

I’ve also always wanted a denim dress. Actually, I’ve always wanted two: one for everyday wear, and the other for posh dos. Let me explain….I can’t remember when or who—possibly Angelina Jolie or Britney Spears—but she wore the most fabulous evening gown made of denim and I was just bowled over by it. I needed it in my life. I used to dream of accepting my Oscar in an extravagant ball gown made of denim. A girl can dream, can’t she? Oh, and the Oscar would be for the Best Screenplay LOL (I’ve never been able to act).

So, back to the denim skirt I found in the thrift shop. I decided to style it with these black platform/wedge, suede, boots that I’ve had for years. I adore them. I used to have a pair in brown too, but for some stupid reason, I got rid of them! Idiot! I wear them a lot in the winter, especially when we go out to dinner somewhere chilly. Anyway, on this occasion, I wore green tights with them for a bit of fun. I bought the sage green sweater from Promod a few years ago but don’t actually wear it that often, for some reason. It has gold ‘sequins’ on the front (they’re not actually sequins, but I don’t know what to call them!) but I wish they went all over. It bugs me when tops only have the design on the front—I want them on the back too!

I’m also wearing my beautiful Ana Sousa coat that we bought years ago when I was a bit slimmer. In other words, it’s a bit snug now. But I won’t part with it, because it’s so gorgeous and it was quite pricey at the time. I think we might have bought it to wear to Michael’s niece’s wedding in England (in the winter). Finally, I’m using my newest handbag (or should I call it a tote on account of it’s size?). I’d seen it in Stradivarius several times and had fallen for it’s colour (I’m obsessed with green), but I didn’t buy it until the sales started. It only cost me 12 euros! Bargain, right?!

Here are some denim skirts and dresses that I LOVE the look of….especially the dresses which certainly have the WOW factor…

But that’s enough about the denim skirts in my life (or lack thereof) and my OOTD, what have you been up to lately? I hope you’ll share in the Neverending Style Link-Up this week. Thank you so much for sticking around! Oh, and in case you’re curious about the fabulous car in the background….I’ll tell you that story next week!

  1. As a long time homeschooling mum, I have a sort of visceral reaction to the denim thing because of the stereotypical denim jumper we all supposedly wore. Having said that, you were adorable in yours with all the green!

  2. I really like that skirt! And green and blue are always a great combo, green works so well with denim! 🙂

I stopped wearing denim minis when my sons were little, but they are bigger and in school now so this summer has been the summer of denim skirts, haha! I’ve gone from 1 chambray maxi skirt I’ve loved for years to adding 3 new shorter denim skirts to my wardrobe, I guess I’ve gotten lucky as they know to stay in place, haha! Maybe all the extra chocolate consumption over Christmas helped with that 😉

    Thanks for the link up!

Hope your week is going well 🙂

LOL Mica!! I’ve had too much chocolate over Christmas (and now too!) and it hasn’t helped the skirt issue. Perhaps you’ve just found the perfect denim skirt.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I’ve had a busy week this week…I’ve been working on a new online shop at Redbubble! Lots to do!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend too.

I like a denim skirt and have a couple. For dresses and skirt I always prefer a softer Chambray though. Styled with the tights and knee-high boots this one looks good xx

    • Suzy says:

Thanks Laurie! I agree about the Chambray, in fact I had intended to mention that in the post. Oh well, could be a subject for a future one! Have a lovely weekend.

  4. Suzy, this outfit is so adorable! You know I am loving the green and that tote is super fun. What a fabulous bargain, too! I hear you on the denim skirt issue. I have a few different denim skirts that I sometimes wear but they do all have that shifting problem. Thankfully, I think every one of mine was preloved! And your denim gown dreams are very similar to my camouflage gown dreams! My older sister had a friend in high school who made her prom gown out of camouflage and I have been obsessed with having something similar for myself ever since. I even shopped for camo gowns when I had opportunities for wearing a gown but could never find what I wanted. A friend has offered to make one for me if I give up the hunt and give into the urge! I may take her up on it one day!

I found one denim skirt last year that i really love and I have my eye on a denim dress at Target but i would like to wait for a sale for that one. I do agree many just turn around when you walk. This one sure looks cute how you styled it.

  6. Hi Suzy!
I remember the ever shifting denim skirt! I bought one at LOFT about 4 years ago that I love as it does stay put and it buttons down the front. Kinda retro. The material is soft. I liked it enough to buy 2 of them so that I have a backup 🙂 This looks lovely on you – I especially love the green on you. I do get rid of things sometimes and then wish I hadn’t later. Love the wedge on the boots!
    Have a great weekend Suzy!

I love this look, Suzy! But it is the worst when clothes won’t say where the are supposed to! I have a couple of my husband’s denim jeans I intend to try making into skirts just as you described. I inherited them because they have rips in them, but I call those opportunities for embellishment. LOL! Your green tote is such a fabulous color.

I know exactly what you mean. I have bought and tossed many. I feel they are either too short and tight or too long and matronly. I can’t seem to find a happy medium. Love your outfit!

  9. Marsha Banks says:

Gah!!! I know exactly what you mean about denim skirts doing the twist on your body! And, why is it only denim skirts that do that? Back in the late 70s, I had the coolest denim skirt. It was midi length, buttoned up the front, and had two or three slim denim belts that criss crossed! I sorta outgrew it when the baby days began! I do have two fabulous denim dresses…well, three because one doesn’t fit right now…and I wear them lots. But, I don’t know what it is about a denim skirt…it makes me think I’m a Mennonite woman (do they have that religion in Europe)!

Aside from your “doing the twist” skirt, you look amazing in it! I love the green tights with it…gives it that unexpected pop of color!

Thanks so much, Suzy, for the link up!

I know exactly what you mean. I just put my denim skirt on Vinted. It was a pencil skirt one, couldn’t walk in it only with crossed legs, pff the horror. I think it was Angelina Jolie with the dress. Wasn’t it Versace or …. its at the point of my tongue. I will look it up!

  11. Gail says:

Denim skirts. I’ve had a few in my time but never one I really loved. As you say, it’s so difficult to find one that fits properly and doesn’t ride up. Longer ones I find too uncomfortable. The length of your thrift find is just perfect. Enjoy the rest of the weekend xx

  12. Lovely says:

The skirt looks cute on you! It’s a shame that it doesn’t sit on you as it should. Love the bag!
