Link-Up: a Practical Magic inspired outfit for Halloween

Practical Magic inspired outfit

For today’s Neverending Style link-up, and because it’s almost Halloween, I figured I would have some fun and create a Practical Magic inspired outfit. Not a costume or a fancy dress outfit, mind you, but an outfit to wear any time. I’m not taking inspiration from Nicole Kidman or Sandra Bullock’s characters though, I’m turning to my favourite character in the movie: Aunt Frances, played by Stockard Channing (she’s the one with the parasol in the first YouTube video below).

If I had a large floppy witch’s hat, I would have worn it, but I don’t so I settled on my trusty black summer hat instead, and I think it’s the perfect addition to this witchy outfit. I bought the faux leather skirt a couple of months ago from H&M and I’m so glad I did, because it looks great with the knee-high boots (which are YEARS old, by the way). I chose a simple black knit top to wear beneath my crocheted kimono and added this fabulous scarf that I picked up from a thrift store recently. The second I laid my eyes on it, I knew it must be mine. I mean, just look at the colours! Black, white and bright orange—it’s utterly perfect for Halloween, right?

And because I’m dressing all witchy and quirky, what else should I add but a handbag made of black feathers? The bag belonged to my MIL but she gave it to me a couple of years ago because she hardly ever used it. It’s gorgeous, isn’t it? And finally, I accessorised with numerous witchy-looking necklaces, bracelets and rings—all of which I’m pretty sure were given to me by my MIL lol!

So what do you think of my Practical Magic inspired outfit? Is it something you would wear for a day-to-day look? Or is it a tad too costumey for you? Now, you must excuse me, because my broom is waiting to take me out for a little flight. Happy Halloween Witches!

Because it’s Halloween, I just had to choose Shelbee’s post, Over the Rainbow Halloween Costumes as my favourite this week. Shelbee, and her pal, Monica from Jersey Girl, Texan Heart, styled some super cute outfits based on that old favourite, Wizard of Oz, and they both look SUPER cute! If you haven’t checked them out yet, please go and have a look!

The layering of the scarves is great! Really adds dimension. A witch is usually my go-to costume, but I just put a dark dress on, and a witch hat and call it done. You’ve gone the extra mile here. It’s great!

    • Suzy says:

LOL thank you so much, Alexandra! Witches are so much more fun to dress as than most everything else lol!

This inspired by look is great! I do think the hat is perfect with it. Probably a little too costumy for me to wear but I always like all black outfits.

What fab photos! And love your ingenuity with a sun hat replacing a witch’s hat! I trust you’ll be out trick and treating in your cool outfit (if they do that in Portugal)

    • Suzy says:

Aww thanks Gail! If I was a kid again, I would love to go trick or treating—but we’ve never done it. They are starting to celebrate Halloween a bit more here but because I live in the country, I don’t see really see it. If I was in a larger town, I’d probably turn my lights off and pretend I wasn’t at home lol (bah humbug!!)

I certainly would wear this outfit! And I love Halloween. But we don’t celebrate that here, what a pity. I should start my own tradition…Have a great weekend.

    • Suzy says:

Nancy, I can see wearing it too! We don’t really celebrate Halloween either, to be honest. But it’s the one day of the year where my supernatural weirdness can shine without anyone really saying anything!! lol!
I hope you’re having a fabulous weekend too, my friend!

I love that you get your pups involved in dressing up for Halloween, Jess! That’s just brilliant! I can’t believe you’ve never watched Wizard of Oz!!! It’s such a classic….and has one of my all time favourite songs in it too. Over the Rainbow, the Judy Garland version is amazing!

What a great look. I love that it can be worn on a regular day too.

I’ve hearted Stockard Channing since her Grease days. She’s such a rebel.

Thanks Daenel!! Oh yes of course she was in Grease! I’d completely forgotten. She’s amazing, that woman!

    Hello Suzy,
I admit it, I’m not a fan of Halloween. But your costume looks fabulously good.
In Germany we are in the older ages are not so many fans for Halloween.

    • Suzy says:

We don’t really do much for Halloween either, Martina, but I do like to style my outfit just a little bit dark lol!

  17. Oh, Suzy, you make my heart happy at your fun outfit. It’s all about the accessories and props with costumes – love the hat! I have never seen “Practical Magic” – obviously an oversight.
