Book Review: A Scottish Island Surprise by Holly Wyld

A Scottish Island Surprise (Primrose Island Novellas)

“Far as I’m aware–” Joe said, dropping his head briefly, the better to compose his features, “–far as I’m aware, Miss, we’ve no rabies in the Hebrides at the moment.”

Rose Mackie has inherited a house on a far-flung Scottish island from her curmudgeon of a father who wanted nothing whatsoever to do with her.

So she lands on Primrose Island with the intention of packing up the old beach house, selling it to the first person who’ll make an offer, and moving firmly on. But Joe Fraser, her late father’s neighbour, has some inconvenient news for her on that front.

Rose prepares for battle – only to find that the longer she spends on Primrose Island, and the more time she spends around Joe in particular, the more she begins to question everything she thought she knew…

My Review

What a lovely short story. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of ‘A Scottish Island Surprise.’ Holly Wyld takes us to Primrose Island, and if you’re a fan of heartwarming short stories, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy, and characters you can’t help but fall in love with, then this is the perfect escape for you.

Rose Mackie’s journey begins with an inheritance from her father, a house on a remote Scottish island. Her initial plan is straightforward: pack up, sell the beach house, and move on. But as fate would have it, her father’s neighbor, Joe Fraser, has news that changes everything.

As I dove into Holly’s words, I found myself engrossed in the story. The writing style is both easy to read and engaging, and the characters are so endearing that you can’t help but root for them. The humor and sweet moments woven into the narrative make it an enjoyable and quick read.

And let’s not forget the enchanting Scottish island setting. Holly’s descriptions transport you to the wild and beautiful landscapes of Primrose Island, which was a real treat for me as I have a soft spot for Hebridean scenery.

Now, here’s my only complaint: I wish this novella were longer! It had all the makings of a fantastic full-length novel, but even in its brevity, it managed to tell a sweet and gentle story that left me utterly satisfied.

In conclusion, ‘A Scottish Island Surprise’ is a five-star gem. If you’re seeking a heartwarming and romantic escape to the stunning Scottish isles, this novella will sweep you off your feet and leave you with a smile on your face.

Mireille, I haven’t been into a library for almost 40 years! If I lived in the UK (or the US), I’d be there all the time!
