Style Imitating Art: Ellen Terry as Lady MacBeth

This week’s Style Imitating Art inspiration piece is Ellen Terry as Lady MacBeth by John Singer Sargent. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10pm Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This week, the curator is Salazar. For the last Style Imitating Art challenge, we styled Dining Room in the Country by Pierre Bonnard.

After seeing Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth, I had grand ideas of creating another piece of art of my own (a bit like I did when we styled Booky)—I was going to wear my long blue Massimo Dutti dress and had intended to wear my red wig. However, when I started getting dressed, even though it was overcast, I got so hot and sticky, I just couldn’t bear it. So, I ended up throwing on my blue and green dress (that I’ve had forever) and added some gold accessories and a blue scarf, et voila… my style interpretation of John Singer Sargent’s Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth!

Even though it’s not quite the grand piece of art I’d intended, I’m pretty pleased with this look, although I couldn’t wear these heels for long. I think I might have mentioned what happened to my toe a few weeks ago? I’m pretty sure I fractured it by walking into a kitchen stool (I’ve done it several times over the years). But that’s not all… a week later, I whacked the damn thing for a second time. Ouch! But wait…another week went by and guess what? I stubbed it for a third time!! By now, my poor little toe was in a right state. I literally sat down and cried for about five minutes because it hurt so much. Anyway, it’s obviously taking a long while to heal so I’m struggling to wear certain shoes at the moment. Thank goodness for the Fit Flops I ordered recently. I’ve been living in them!

Did you style the SIA theme this week? How did you do it? It’s a fabulous painting isn’t it? I’d definitely have this hanging on my wall!

  1. I love it, Suzy! And I really love your hair in braids, too. What a fabulous dress. It looks amazing on you! I wanted to style something different but didn’t have time and used a previously photographed outfit that worked wonderfully. And you know I relate to your toe issues. I break my toes at least 50% of the times that I stub them! I hope it heals soon like before it’s too cold and you need to wear shoes!

I really like how the pattern of the dress reminds me of the texture of the dress in the painting. Glad you went with something that wouldn’t make you pass out from the heat!

  4. I just could not go away your website before suggesting that I really loved the usual information an individual provide on your visitors? Is going to be back continuously in order to check up on new posts.

  5. Most excellent interpretation even without the red wig. Your beautiful peaches and cream complexion mimic Lady Macbeth’s and the lines and colors of your outfit are spot on. Was interested in your plaid shoes. I have been eyeing some similar on Poshmark and the seller offered me a good deal but they are a half-size smaller than I prefer to wear. Especially in heels. Your chunky gold jewelry is icing on the SIA cake!!
