How to rejuvenate your skin after stress

Stress is one of the leading causes of skin disorders. When we encounter a stressful situation, two hormones are released in the brain – cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones are not always helpful and lead to premature ageing (bummer, right?!). Here is how to rejuvenate your skin after stress.

Exfoliate the skin

Stress can lead to excess oil in the skin resulting in breakouts even when you haven’t changed your skincare routine at all. Noticing unusual breakouts in the skin is a sign that you have been stressed recently. It’s helpful to reflect on the causes of stress to help you avoid them next time.

For now, you should take care of the breakouts. These breakouts are caused by excess oil, so one of the first things recommended is to cleanse your face using a quality, natural, cleanser. Next, exfoliate the skin to remove dirt from the pores. Your skin will soon clear up.

Moisturise the skin

Stress hormones in the body create inflammation and dry skin. Cortisol and adrenaline create inflammation to heal the body from bacteria, injuries, and infections, but they also reduce moisture in the skin, making it dry and flakey. This is something you might notice when stressed.

Stress hormones reduce the moisture barrier of the skin, making it dry and flaky and leading to premature ageing. We are advised to use thick moisturiser during the night because that is when the moisture barrier is low, but it’s even more important when you’re stressed out.

Rejuvenate the skin

Most people turn their attention to rejuvenation when their skin is looking a little dull and tired. There are numerous ways to rejuvenate the skin when it’s in this condition; you could enjoy a spa treatment, for instance, or use a facial cleanser at home. But why wait for tired skin?

A product such as spf 25 day cream is specially formulated to protect the skin throughout the day when you are most likely to be stressed. Instead of waiting for the damage caused by low hydration, a day cream maintains skin quality and elasticity while commuting and in meetings, for example.

Treat the dullness

Another symptom of stress is dullness in the skin. This happens when the skin is deprived of oxygen and loses its glow; you might have noticed this after a long day at the office or when you are going through a stressful time with your work or personal life. But there are ways to treat it.

Start with a basic skincare routine that includes moisturising, exfoliating, hydrating, and toning. Remember to always use natural skin care products to prevent chemicals and toxins from entering the body. Simply hydrating the skin and removing skin cells help bring back the glow.

Control ageing

While you can’t prevent your cells from dividing and growing older, you can slow the process by avoiding stress and using the best skin care products for your skin type. One of the best ways to reduce stress and prevent lines and wrinkles is to practice mindfulness and stress reduction. I always recommend yoga and meditation, something I do five mornings a week before I start my day. Well…that and coffee! 😉
