Skinny jeans, flares…who cares?

Flares

So skinny jeans are dead, are they? I have one word in response to that: bollocks. Seriously, I hate reading that we should no longer wear a particular item of clothing simply because ‘someone’, or Gen-XYZ, has said so. Seriously folks, WTF? Skinny jeans are a staple in my wardrobe and they have been for almost as long as I can remember. I even wore them in the 80s when I was a kid. In my eyes, they WILL NEVER GO OUT. And I sure as hell won’t stop wearing them because an 18-year-old has said so. Sod that!

However, I am, and have also been for a very long time, a HUGE fan of flares. I wasn’t around when they were a massive fashion statement the first time around though…ahem! Okay, okay, so I was around, I was just wearing nappies at the time lol (FYI I was born at the end of 1975). Flares are one of those things that look good on many shapes, especially if you’re curvaceous.

When something I love comes back into fashion (not that I care if something is ever out of fashion, but you’ve probably gathered that about me by now, right?!), like flares—it’s great that they become much easier to buy.

I’m one of those people who often wants what isn’t available, and it drives me crazy. For instance, yesterday I decided my wardrobe needs more colour. So, I went online (in other words, I spent the entire afternoon shopping) and started perusing the sites for brightly coloured trousers and tops. Do you think I could find any?? Barely a single thing. Mind you, I was only looking at sites in Portugal, like H&M, Bershka, Massimo Dutti, Stradivarius, etc). Perhaps I’d have more luck shopping in the UK or US, but I’m loathed to buy stuff from there and then have to pay customs taxes on them (God, I hate Brexit!!).

Anyway, I ended up buying some stuff because it was the last day of the sales and I’m a sucker for a good bargain. But I bought very little in bright colours. This season it seems to be all about the pastels, which are okay, but they do bore me a bit. But what did I buy? Hm…well, I bought lots of pink, paler pinks than what I’d intended, but at least it’s a bit more colour to add to my darker wardrobe. I’m happy. Until it arrives and none of it fits lol. I’ll keep you posted.

Why pink? I dunno. I’m just very into pink right now (it is my second favourite colour after green). It’s probably because of my new cloffice, which is all white, grey and pink. I will show it to you soon, I’m just waiting for a couple of little things to be done first.

I wear skinny jeans almost every day at home. Like I said, they’re my wardrobe staple and they’re also the best thing to wear with boots. But on this occasion, I simply fancied wearing something else for a change. Hence the flares. I bought these from Stradivarius a few years ago. They were miles too long (what is it about these shops selling jeans that need an extra foot taking off them? Drives me crazy) so I had to hem them, which isn’t ideal with flares because you lose the best part of the…well, the flare! Anyhoo, they didn’t turn out too badly.

I’m wearing them with my mustard Woden sneakers again, simply because I love the slight retro vibe they have—which is perfect with flares. Beneath this fabulous super thick cardigan from Massimo Dutti (about five years old) is a simple chocolate brown turtle neck. My necklace is actually the snitch (from Quidditch in Harry Potter), a gift from my mother-in-law because she knows I’m a big fan lol.

As for my handbag, I thought my brown leather Massimo Dutti manbag was the perfect accessory. All in all, it’s an outfit with a retro vibe. At least I think it is, anyway! What about you? Do you get that vibe? Do you like flares? Or skinnies? Will you stop wearing skinnies?

BTW, did you link up to my brand new #neverendingstyle link-up on Friday? It’ll be open another couple of days and then there’ll be another one along with my interview with Jacqui from Mumma B Stylish! I shall look forward to seeing you there!

Oh how I do love your style of writing! So British! Love it. I have a skinny jeans in my cart right now, my first pair. And what do young people know about what looks good anyway, lol.

I miss the link up and will have to get to it this Friday. I love the whole vibe of this outfit: warm and cozy and the mustard sneakers are the perfect addition. Wearing a mustard denim jacket today and like you am on the lookout for colorful tops for spring.

Thank you so much, Mireille! It’s quite a retro look, isn’t it? Your mustard denim jacket is fabulous, I think I saw it on Insta!

Those are really cute. I am old enough that i wore flares the first time around. Hip hugger bell bottoms, to be precise. Loved those jeans. Now i cant be arsed to wear any floppy clothes, or things that get in my way. I love skinny jeans for that reason, and also because BOOTS.

    • Suzy says:

LOL Annie, I know what you mean about floppy clothes! But I am trying to wear more of my wardrobe rather than sticking to the skinny jeans all the time. But I adore them and will never stop wearing them!
      Thanks for stopping by!

I’m not giving up my skinny jeans, either. But I do like your flares.

Whenever I read or heard of a trend coming in or going out, I nearly always believe that the fashion industry is behind it and it’s all a marketing ploy to get the masses to go out and buy new stuff.

I think you’re absolutely right, Rena! The fashion industry has a lot to answer for!

I agree! And I will wear whatever style jean that takes my fancy. I love bootcut or flares though. They are my favourite xx

  6. Suzy, this is such a fun post! I am like you with denim…I love my skinny jeans and will continue to wear them just as I will continue to wear my boyfriend jeans and my ripped jeans and my overalls. But flares are having a huge moment, too, and they are ever so flattering on everyone. I just bought a new pair of flares this weekend and the slimming effect is wonderful! I love this outfit and the retro vibe you created with those cool mustard trainers and your cozy cardigan. I am so looking forward to seeing your finished cloffice! The color palette sounds so beautiful.

Thank you so much, Shelbee! I love that you mentioned boyfriend jeans, ripped jeans and overalls too. I have boyfriend jeans but they’re a little on the slim side. I could do with looking for some that are a looser fit. I also have two pairs of ripped jeans but I’ve worn them so much that the denim is starting to look horrible! As for overalls, I assume that’s what we call dungarees?? I don’t have any. I had a black pair that would really skinny, but they were a bit tight so I gave them to my teenage neighbour lol!

“Sod that” is my new favorite expression. I. Love. It. Your cardigan is fabulous!!

I’m a flare girl to the core. I think it’s because I have big feet or something. LOL But I love leggings and consider them pants – that’s a hill I’m willing to fight on.

    • Suzy says:

LOL I can just imagine you saying ‘Sod that’ in your American accent, Daenel!! I love that!!
You look so fabulous in flares, by the way.
      Hugs

  8. Gail says:

Coincidentally pink and green are my favourite colours too (and lilac!). Skinny jeans are “out” again? Yeah right – I think most of us love our skinnies and won’t give them up, as you say, just because someone has decided we should. I used to love flares in the 70s, before your time, but I’ve never taken to them since. The only style of jeans I like, apart from skinnies, is straight leg. Thanks for linking at #WowOnWednesday xx

    • Suzy says:

I’ve always quite liked straight leg jeans too, Gail. I gave away my last pair though because they were a bit low on the waist and were quite uncomfortable. I must look for some new ones!

I love this outfit Suzy! The cardigan looks so cosy and pairs beautifully with the flared jeans. Fab mustard trainers too! Thanks for linking up!
