Songful Style: All About that Bass

All About That Bass

Welcome to the May edition of Songful Style! Hosted by myself, Shelbee (Shelbee on the Edge) and Marsha (Marsha in the Middle) (Michelle was also a part of the group but she has left us to focus on her other passions, and you can now find her at My Bijou Life), Songful Style is a collaboration featuring outfits inspired by songs. We’re also inviting anyone who would like to join us, to post their own outfits in the link-up below. It doesn’t matter from what angle the song inspires the outfit, it can be from the lyrics, the title, the tune itself, the album cover, music video, etc. Last month our song was Girls Just Want to Have Fun and was chosen by Marsha. This month, our Songful Style song was chosen by Michelle and is All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor.

Released in 2014, this song brought some serious sass and body positivity into the music scene, and it’s a real timeless bop for all ages, right? When it first hit the airwaves, it became an instant hit. Meghan’s fun, upbeat style and catchy lyrics had everyone tapping their feet and singing along. The song’s message is all about embracing your curves and loving your body just the way it is. It was a refreshing departure from the unrealistic beauty standards often portrayed in the media and the video makes fun of that.

Not only did the song have a positive impact on body image, but it also had a retro vibe that took us back to the days of Motown and ’60s pop. Meghan’s soulful voice, combined with the catchy melody and upbeat tempo, created an irresistible blend that had people dancing and singing along wherever they went.

As for the style of the video, it was the ‘preppy’ element that I decided to pick up on. The buttons of the shirts done right up to the neck and finished off with a brooch was something that really appealed to me. It’s a style I’ve been loving since having my hair super short! It’s really weird because when my hair was long, I wasn’t as keen on the look. Funny how our hairstyles can influence what we like to wear!

But back to the Songful Style. I focussed in on Meghan’s shirt, brooch and cardigan combo and went with that. I would have loved to have styled a short a-line mini skirt but I’m really not comfortable with showing my legs these days…unless it’s the middle of winter and I can wear thick tights lol. But it’s way too warm for that now.

Because my shirt was pale blue, I wanted blue trousers to go with it, and the only blue trousers I have are jeans! What a surprise, eh? Yes…I’m obsessed with them lol. This pair is new, from Salsa (I believe I wore the lighter coloured pair for last month’s Songful Style post lol) I turned them up to give them more of a 60s vibe (if that makes sense) and added my peachy-coloured brogues (Clarks) which I think worked perfectly with the rest of the outfit, especially the orange slim-fitting cardigan (from H&M, they have them in different colours every season). I inherited the brooch from my late step-mother-in-law, Lillian. And the final touch, the pretty pink handbag, was a gift from my late mother-in-law, Jackie.

All in all, I really like the way this look came together. It was a really fun challenge, and I particularly loved re-watching the video over and over because it’s such a catchy tune, with a powerful message (see the full lyrics below). How would you style an outfit based on this song? If you’ve joined in the fun, please link up your posts below. And next month, I really hope you’ll join in because I’ve chosen to pay tribute to the wonderful late Tina Turner and her song, What’s Love Got To Do With It.

Lyrics

Because you know I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass (bass, bass, bass, bass)

Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two
But I can shake it, shake it, like I’m supposed to do
‘Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase
And all the right junk in all the right places
I see the magazines (ah-ha) workin’ that Photoshop (ah-ha)
We know that shit ain’t real
Come on now, make it stop
If you got beauty beauty (ah-ha), just raise ’em up
‘Cause every inch of you is perfect
From the bottom to the top

Yeah, my mama she told me don’t worry about your size (shoo-wop, wop)
(Sha-ooh-wop, wop)
She says, boys like a little more booty to hold at night
(That booty, booty, uh, that booty, booty)
And no I won’t be no stick-figure, silicone Barbie doll (shoo-wop, wop)
(Sha-ooh-wop, wop)
So, if that’s what’s you’re into
Then go ahead and move along

Because you know I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass, ’bout that bass, hey

I’m bringing booty back
Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that
No, I’m just playing I know y’all think you’re fat
But I’m here to tell you
Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah, my mama she told me don’t worry about your size (shoo-wop, wop)
(Sha-ooh-wop, wop)
She says, boys like a little more booty to hold at night
(That booty, booty, uh, that booty, booty)
And no I won’t be no stick-figure, silicone Barbie doll (shoo-wop, wop)
(Sha-ooh-wop, wop)
So, if that’s what’s you’re into
Then go ahead and move along

Perfect outfit! I love the brooch at the neck of the button down. It’s a wonderful representation of the song’s overall vibe. The blush purse is another perfect piece. Awesome interpretation. And I love, love, love your booty photo! ❤️❤️❤️

  2. This outfit is absolutely adorable! Love the brogues with it.

  3. Suzy, I love this adorable look on you! I really like that your starting point was a brooch at the neck and the whole outfit came together beautifully after that. The brogues are a really nice touch, too! I agree with you that our hairstyles definitely effect what we choose to wear. As much as I love my hats, I never wore hats when I had short hair. Now I almost always wear a hat! Great job on this challenge, my friend!
